  9. CompuServe has developed a new Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) designed to
  10. serve a wide variety of graphics needs both within the CompuServe product
  11. environment and as a universal standard by which graphics can be exchanged
  12. between any parties through a network.  This document serves as a simple
  13. explanation of what GIF is and what it is capable of.

  15. WHAT IS GIF?

  17. GIF (pronounced "Jif") is a mechanism of storing high-quality color graphics
  18. images in a way that can be exchanged between users of differing hardware.  For
  19. example it allows images created on an Atari ST to be displayed on a Commodore
  20. Amiga or IBM-PC and visa versa.  The GIF format allows for very high resolution,
  21. full color images that can be used in any application that requires the display
  22. of graphics information.

  28. WHAT KIND OF IMAGES CAN GIF BE USED FOR?

  30. GIF images can be part of, but not limited to the following applications:
  31.  
  32.  - Full color personel photo board
  33.  - Business charts and graphics
  34.  - Merchandise catalogs
  35.  - Technical documentation
  36.  - Schematic diagrams for field service personnel
  37.  - Color radar maps
  38.  - Medical illustrations
  39.  - Art gallery
  40.  - Exchange of user-created images

  42. HOW MUCH RESOLUTION CAN AN IMAGE HAVE?

  44. In terms of pixels, or image dots, GIF is capable of defining images of over
  45. 16,000 by 16,000 individual dots.  This compares with the average microcomputer
  46. screen of 320 by 200 pixels.  Even laser printers are generally limited to about
  47. 2000 by 3000 pixels.  GIF technology is adequate for graphics applications for

  54. HOW MANY COLORS CAN A GIF IMAGE HAVE?
  55.  
  56. Any GIF image can have up to 256 simultaneous colors contained within it. Each
  57. individual color can be defined out of a possible set of 16 million colors,
  58. making photographic-quality images possible.

  60. DOES THIS MEAN AN IBM-PC CANNOT DISPLAY GIF IMAGES WITH 256 COLORS?

  62. All GIF images can be processed by all GIF software.  The software is designed
  63. to make the best use of a specific hardware's capabilities with regard to
  64. colors.  A best match is made between a desired color in the image, and the
  65. possible colors the hardware can display.  Generally, detail of an image will be
  66. lost, but it should still be recognizable.  On the other side, any image
  67. originating from an IBM machine should display exactly on a more capable
  68. microcomputer.

  76. This will vary a great deal depending on the number of colors present, the size
  77. of the image and the amount of detail present.  GIF uses a sophisticated
  78. compression method that reduces the file size to between 1/2 to 1/8 of the
  79. original file size of the image.  This means that even complex images can be
  80. economically downloaded.  An example is an Atari ST image file of 320 by 200
  81. pixels and 16 colors which would require 32,000 bytes on the Atari might only
  82. require 8,000 bytes in GIF format, a space savings of 4 to 1.

  84. WHAT MICROS CAN SUPPORT GIF?
  85.  
  86. Currently CompuServe has developed software for a number of microcomputers to
  87. display or create GIF format files.  Additional hardware will be supported as
  88. time goes on.  The GIF standard document will be made public and third party
  89. authors will be encouraged to create additional GIF software for other hardware.

  103. The software files can be found in the Picture Support Forum (GO PICS) and in
  104. the appropriate hardware FORUMS.

  106. WHERE ARE THE GIF FILES THAT CAN BE DISPLAYED?
  107.  
  108. Currently many GIF files are available in the Data Libraries of the Picture
  109. Support Forum.  Each appropriate hardware forum will also accumulate GIF files
  110. as time goes on.  The CompuServe FORUM software has a GIF file type established
  111. for upload and display of GIF image files.  In the future CompuServe will
  112. enhance existing products and add new ones that support GIF.

  114. CAN GIF fILES BE DISPLAYED ONLINE?
  115.  
  116. CompuServe's newest terminal software package, the Professional Connection 3.1,
  117. supports display of GIF image files while online.  Additionally, other software
  118. vendors are developing terminal software that also supports online viewing of
  119. GIF image files.  Please check "What's New" for information concerning GIF
